while driving home and listening to bruce springsteen, the husband and i were inspired to list all the songs that reference trains we can think of. can you think of any others?
to keep the list from becoming unweildy, no country songs, please… i mean, it would be easier to start a list of country songs that don’t reference trains.
- Downbound Train, Bruce Springsteen
- Midnight Train to Georgia, Gladys Knight and the Pips
- Folsom Prison Blues, Johnny Cash
- Don’t Stop Believin’, Journey
- Crazy Train, Ozzy Osbourne
- Downtown Train, Tom Waits
- Radio Nowhere, Bruce Springsteen
- Runaway Train, Soul Asylum
- Nightrain, Guns and Roses
- City of New Orleans, Arlo Guthrie
- Morning Train, Sheena Easton
- Love Train, O’ Jays
- Train of Consequences, Megadeth
- Last Train to Clarksville, The Monkees
- Leavin’ Train, Bruce Springsteen
- Take the A Train, Duke Ellington (added by Jim)
- Chattanooga Choo Choo, Glen Miller (added by Jim)
- This Train is Bound for Glory, Woody Guthrie (added by Jim)
- The Angels Have Gone, David Bowie (added by Carrie, who once again shames me)
- Train in the Distance, Paul Simon (added by Carrie)
Only 15! Even without country (although you did include Johnny Cash!) there are plenty more.
You included Monkees so I will go back a little further and say Take the A Train by Duke Ellington and Glen Miller’s Chattanooga Choo Choo. How about Woodie Guthrie’s This Train
thanks for the additions, Jim. good call on all of them! i know there are way more than 15 songs out there. we need more people like you to get the numbers up
Journey: Don’t stop believing
There’s also a Mat Kearney song…
And there’s a reason for the country music and train thing, I think….Nashville is a center for train traffic, and no matter where in the city you are (short of downtown), you hear the train’s whistle at night when you sleep with the windows open. It makes me think of Charles City.
5.15 The Angels Have Gone (David Bowie)
Train in the Distance (Paul Simon)
